若鳩の飼育方法は非常に特殊で、細心の注意と厳格な管理を要します。
最速で生後4.5ヶ月、通常は生後6ヶ月前後で成熟に至ります。
交尾後、雄雌は鳥籠内で用意された巣箱に藁や羽根を用いて巣を作り始めます。
交尾後8～12日で、雌は通常2個の卵を産みます。
抱卵は雄雌双方によって約18日間行われます。
卵が孵化すると、雛は親鳥のくちばしから分泌される乳（7～10日間）で育てられます。その後、雛は親鳥のくちばしに自分のくちばしを差し込み、親鳥が餌を飲み込むことで給餌を受けます。
最初の卵が孵化してから12～15日後、雌は再び排卵を開始し、さらに2個の卵を産みます。その結果、約2週間の間、親鳥は交代で新しい卵を温めながら2羽の雛に餌を与えます。年間平均14羽の雛を育てます。
約30日後、雛は巣を離れ始め、成鳥と似た姿になります。

Once the eggs have hatched, the young are nursed by the parents with the milk produced in their crops (for 7 to 10 days). They then feed by inserting their beaks into the parents' beaks, which then swallow the food.
Twelve to fifteen days after the first clutch has hatched, the female begins ovulating again and lays two more eggs. Consequently, for about two weeks, the parents take turns incubating the new eggs and feeding the two young. They will raise an average of 14 young per year.
After about thirty days, the young begin to leave their nest and appear similar to the adults.
